1. Those who do not belong to Christ cannot say, Our Father who art in heaven, they may say, ‘Our father who art in hell.’
8. Who Art in heaven.
- Heaven is where we find the Central Intelligence Agency of the universe.
- It is where the supreme commander has His throne—the seat of all power, wisdom, authority, dominion, and glory.
- He is light and there is no darkness in Him. He dwells in unapproachable light.
- Here the supreme commander rules and reigns with jurisdiction over every atom in the universe.
9. Holy be thy name
1. This speaks of worship.
John 4:23-24 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
2. This means by faith and according to Word-the Bible.
1. Ps. 22:3 God sits enthroned praises…
2. Revelation says God keeps the prayers of the saints in bowls!
10. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
- The word “kingdom,” is basileia in Greek, it literally means to “rule” or “reign.”
- The kingdom, in this case, is the rule and reign of the Lord Jesus Christ–the Captain of our Salvation.
- But, the kingdom is in conflict. A battle has been raging for untold thousands of years between the Prince of Persia and the Prince of Peace.
- In more than 55 countries (kingdoms) of the world, it is illegal punishable by death, dismemberment, or prison to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Jesus knew very well that the world would be divided over His truth. In Mathew 10:34 Jesus said:
- “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”
- “They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.”
The future aspect of the kingdom of God is coming.
Rev 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there arose loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become {the kingdom} of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He will reign forever.”
12. Give us this day our daily bread.
- Why not be more economical and say, give us this year our annual portion? The idea is repeated in one sentence, this day—daily!
- Remember when God provided manna in the wilderness?
- Jesus, “Don’t worry about tomorrow.”
- Because tomorrow belongs to God alone.
- No man knows what a day may bring forth.
- What would it profit a man if he gained the whole world and lost his soul?
- Most people spend their lives trying to improve their civil conveniences. Trying to improve eat, wear, live.
- Matt. 6:33, “Seek first kingdom of God….”
- Ps 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom.
- Most people cannot see past immediate/ live like never die.
- In Matthew 6:19-21″Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy….”
- How would you live if you lived every day as if it were your last?
11. Forgive us trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Mark 11:25, “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your transgressions.
12. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
- The word translated “temp” here means to test or to prove. It means to test the strength or loyalty of something or someone.
- Satan stood before God in Job 1:8
- And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.”
This prayer reveals our true relationship with God.
- Our father / We are God’s children.
- Who art in heaven. He is infinite, we are finite.
- Holy be thy name … He is the object / we worship Him.
- Thy kingdom come … He is the sovereign King / we are His subjects.
- Thy will be done… Master / servant.
- Give us this day; our daily bread … He is our provider.
- Forgive us … He is our Savior.
- Lead us not … He is our guide.
- Deliver us evil… He is our protector
It also defines the heart attitude we must adopt.
- Our= we are to be unselfish
- Father, we are family
- Holy … a deep reverence/ not flippant.
- lead us not … a desire for strength and conviction.
- thine is the kingdom … hope and victory.
- and the power … we are weak / then we are strong.
- and the glory … We are to humble ourselves before Him.
GOD HATES HYPOCRISY
- You cannot say “our” if you live only for yourself.
- You cannot say “Father” if you do not endeavor each day to live like one of His children.
- You cannot say “who art in heaven” if you are not laying up treasure there.
- You cannot say “hallowed be thy name” if you have secret sin in your life.
- You cannot say “thy Kingdom come” if you do not long for His appearing, and not doing your part inviting people to the marriage supper.
- You cannot say “thy will be done” if you are not obeying His word.
- You cannot say “on earth as it is in heaven” if I do not serve him here and now.
- You cannot say “give us this day our daily bread” if you are dishonest or do not work.
- You cannot say “forgive us our debts” if you do not forgive your brother.
- You cannot say “lead us not into temptation” if you are standing in the path of sinners.
- You cannot say “deliver us from evil” if make provision for the flesh, and fail to put on the whole armor of God.
- You cannot say “thine is the kingdom” if you love the things of this world.
- You cannot say thine is “the power” if you are self-sufficient.
- You cannot say “thine is the glory” if you love the praise of men more than the praise that comes for the only God.
- And, you cannot say “forever” if all you are living for is time.
Christians are the only ones who have access to the throne of God
1. 1 Timothy 2:5 says: For there is one God, {and} one mediator also between God and men, {the} man Christ Jesus.
2. The privileges and responsibilities of this fact are sobering. In Luke 12:48.
- And from everyone who has been given much shall much be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.
- “And I searched for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. “Thus I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their way I have brought upon their heads,” declares the Lord GOD. Ezek. 22: 30- 31
- “If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
The power in the Lord’s prayer is in understanding that prayer is more about God changing our minds and hearts than about us changing His!
